Out of Africa!

Sitting here in Johannesburg, South Africa waiting for our return flights home, I am filled with gratitude for all the goodness of the Lord on our visit to southern Africa–specifically to the nation of Zimbabwe.  Cathy and I were joined for the ten day trip by George and Nancy Tissiere as we taught pastors and Christian leaders in three cities–Harare, Mutare and Bulawayo.

Effective training is going on here among so many new leaders and we had the privilege of spending time in formal teaching sessions, vibrant interactive discussions and informal times of great fellowship.  As always, we will come back having learned far more than we were able to communicate to them.  Foremost among the lessons would have to be the joy of living with contentment in Christ even when there is not much by way of material possessions to count on. Worship in each setting was rich and enthusiastic and the people were always gracious and grateful to all of us.

So to all of you who prayed, thanks!

Nothing I desire compares with you…

“Wherever we turn in the church of God, there is Jesus. He is the beginning, middle and end of everything to us…. There is nothing good, nothing holy, nothing beautiful, nothing joyous which He is not to His servants. No one need be poor, because, if he chooses, he can have Jesus for his own property and possession. No one need be downcast, for Jesus is the joy of heaven, and it is His joy to enter into sorrowful hearts. We can exaggerate about many things; but we can never exaggerate our obligation to Jesus, or the compassionate abundance of the love of Jesus to us. All our lives long we might talk of Jesus, and yet we should never come to an end of the sweet things that might be said of HIm.  Eternity will not be long enough to learn all that He is, or to praise Him for all He has done, but then, that matters not; for we shall be always with Him, and we desire nothing more.”  Frederick Faber (quoted in Pursuit of God, A. W. Tozer)

Dads, take a look at “For Dads” Page

Getting time together for dads and their sons…priceless!  Figuring out how to make that time substantive…even more priceless!

Beginning the first week of October, I will post one devotion per week for a father and son to enjoy together.   The content is very brief (as it would have to be to keep the interest of a young man) but should provide enough information to spur more conversation if the timing hits just right!

I look forward to getting feedback from how it goes…including suggestions from you after you get started that might help other dads who might not be as creative as you!

Perhaps sometime in the future, we can have a guest writer with daughters offer something similar for girls, but as the father of three sons, I’m afraid I would not be much help there!

Here’s to solid, growing, Christ-centered relationships in the home!

Introducing Equipped for Life Blog site

Posted on Updated on

Today marks the beginning of the Equipped for Life Blog site.  The most effective blog sites have consistent entries and excellent content.  I can promise neither!  But I do want to provide a place for biblical observations about life and helpful resources to help others grow in Christ.

Information alone is insufficient to produce growth.  There must be a heart that longs to know Christ.  A. W. Tozer in his book, The Pursuit of God, wrote,

“…Too many…seem satisfied to teach the fundamentals of the faith year after year, strangely unaware that there is in their ministry no manifest Presence, nor anything unusual in their personal lives….

For it is not mere words that nourish the soul, but God Himself, and unless and until the hearers find God in personal experience they are not the better for having heard the truth.  The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts.”

That is at the core of what I long for…for myself and for those I love.  My prayer is that this site will help equip you in your pursuit of Christ.  Glad you found me and I hope you will share this page with others.  I look forward to hearing from you!
