Introducing Michael Kelly Blanchard to a New Generation

Posted on Updated on

Back in the early 1980’s, I was introduced to the music of Michael Kelly Blanchard.  He was and still is the master story teller in song.  My first memory was the song “Be Ye Glad,” a great call to worship.  But soon after, a close friend and his wife gave birth to a little boy with Downs Syndrome and we discovered a song by Blanchard called, “Danny’s Downs.”  Although the video quality is bad (it is old, mind you!!), the poignant message of the song still causes me to cry then cheer!

With Joy Prom coming to Providence next Friday, I thought you might enjoy seeing this…many of you for the first time, others coming back to an old friend!

A more recent video with an older Michael has a powerful emotional impact as well, “Daddy Cut My Hair.”  Perhaps it hits harder having just lost my own dad several weeks ago, but I was really moved by this and think lots of sons and fathers would profit from its simple message.

For those who have been around long enough, Michael came to Providence a couple of times when we were over on Leesville Road…great to reconnect with him via video!

I cut my kids hair and that just reminds me to enjoy the task and the closeness while I still have the chance. I also cut my husband’s hair (don’t hold it against him for how he looks it’s not his fault) and that closeness is sweet too. Thanks for sharing!
